In their 36 Hours | Brandywine Valley getaway for New Yorkers, the Times recommends heading to Kennett Square at 8p.m. after a day of sightseeing and visits to the Brandywine River Museum, lunch at Buckley's Tavern in Centreville, 2 hours at Winterthur and a canoe trip.

8 p.m.
Mushrooms and Microbrews

"Kennett Square bills itself as the Mushroom Capital of the World, and indeed, mushrooms have been a thriving local industry since the late 19th century. Start your evening at the Half Moon Restaurant & Saloon (108 West State Street, Kennett Square 610-444-7232) with a plate of Chester County exotic mushrooms served with cranberries and walnuts on ciabatta bread with melted Gorgonzola ($7.50). If the evening is mild try one of the 17 bottled Belgian beers in the rooftop garden. (Downstairs at the bar, 17 beers are on tap.) For dinner, if you're ready for more mushrooms, try the penne primavera with fresh vegetables, exotic mushrooms, pin nuts, pecorino Romano cheese and a basil pesto granish ($15.95). For dessert, head to La Michoacana Homemade Ice Cream (231 East State Street, Kennett Square; 610-444-2996) for authentic Mexican ice cream, sorbet and fruit bars in about 50 flavors, including corn and rice pudding."
